Our local story

Licensed childcares within The Salvation Army in the GTA began as an extension of church-based children’s programming—an intentional response to the growing needs of families in our communities. What started as a ministry of care has grown into a network of trusted childcare centres serving hundreds of families each year.

Our locations reflect a longstanding commitment to community:

  • Erin Mills – Established in 1976
  • Mississauga Temple – Established in 1978
  • Agincourt Temple – Established in 1980
  • Brampton Noah’s Ark – Established in 1983
  • Scarborough Citadel – Established in 1994

Over the decades, our centres have been renovated and expanded to better serve the evolving needs of families across the GTA.

Local commitment statement

The Salvation Army GTA Childcares’ mission is to provide nurturing, safe, inclusive, and high-quality early learning and childcare environments where every child is seen as capable, competent, and curious. Grounded in How Does Learning Happen? and guided by The Salvation Army’s values of hope, service, dignity, and stewardship, we partner with families and communities to support each child’s cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and spiritual growth. Together, we cultivate belonging, well-being, engagement, and expression, helping children flourish and reach their full potential.

Our philosophy & approach

At Salvation Army GTA Licensed Childcare Services, our philosophy is rooted in nurturing the whole child within caring, inclusive, and faith-informed environments. Our approach reflects research-informed practice, provincial pedagogy, and our commitment to community and compassion.

A holistic approach
We recognize that children develop across multiple interconnected domains—social, emotional, physical, cognitive, spiritual, and moral. Growth in one area influences growth in others. Our programs are intentionally designed to support well-rounded development, ensuring that each child feels safe, encouraged, and empowered to thrive.
Play-based learning
Play is at the heart of how children learn. Through exploration, creativity, and hands-on experiences, children develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and confidence. Our environments are thoughtfully prepared to be both stimulating and supportive, allowing children to follow their interests and learn at their own pace.
Guided by how does learning happen?
Our programs are informed by Ontario’s early years framework, How Does Learning Happen? This approach emphasizes the importance of relationships, environments, and experiences in supporting positive learning outcomes. We prioritize meaningful interactions, exploration, and responsive programming that honors children’s natural curiosity and voice.
Spiritual development
Spiritual education is an important part of our identity. It is woven into daily experiences in age-appropriate ways that promote kindness, respect, gratitude, compassion, and a sense of belonging. Our goal is to nurture children’s character and help them develop a sense of purpose and connection to their community.
Community engagement
We believe strong partnerships with families and the broader community are essential. By actively listening and responding to the needs of the communities we serve, we create programs that are relevant, supportive, and collaborative. Together, we build networks of care that strengthen children and families.
Justice, equity, diversity & inclusion (JEDI)
We are committed to creating environments where every child and family feels welcomed, valued, and respected. Through our dedication to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, we ensure equitable access to services and celebrate the richness of diverse backgrounds, cultures, abilities, and experiences.
